In the enchanting world of Stardew Valley, the Dwarf stands out as one of the most enigmatic characters. Nestled deep within the mines, this solitary figure is the only member of his species that players will encounter, adding a layer of mystery and intrigue to the game. As of the latest update, the Dwarf's backstory remains shrouded in mystery, but players can still engage with and befriend him, adding a unique and fantastical element to their journey.
Updated on January 8, 2024, by Demaris Oxman: Recent updates to Stardew Valley have introduced new ways to strengthen friendships with NPCs. The 1.5 update brought the Movie Theater into play, providing a new venue for bonding, while the 1.6 update refined gift preferences and reactions. For those eager to connect with the mysterious Dwarf, this guide has been updated to reflect these changes.
Meeting The Dwarf
To encounter the Dwarf, head to the mines and locate a large boulder to the right of the entrance on the first floor. Players can break this obstacle using a copper pickaxe or better, or opt for a more explosive approach with a bomb. Once the boulder is cleared, venture a short distance to the right to find the Dwarf standing in his quaint shop.
Learn To Speak Dwarvish
Initial interactions with the Dwarf may seem fruitless as he speaks a language unfamiliar to the player. Attempting to communicate or give gifts won't impact friendship levels at this stage. To bridge this linguistic gap, players must collect all four Dwarf Scrolls, a special type of artifact. Once all scrolls are donated to the Museum, Gunther will reward the player with a Dwarvish Translation Guide.
Armed with this guide, return to the mines and speak to the Dwarf once more. With the language barrier removed, players can now understand him, fostering a meaningful connection and the ability to purchase items from his shop.
Gift Guide
Building a friendship with the Dwarf, much like with other residents of Pelican Town, revolves around thoughtful gift-giving. Players can present up to two gifts per week, with the Dwarf's birthday on Summer 22 offering an opportunity to gain eight times the usual friendship points.
Loved Gifts
To significantly boost the Dwarf's friendship, consider these top-tier gifts, each increasing friendship by 80 points:
- Gemstones:
Amethyst,
Aquamarine,
Jade,
Ruby,
Topaz,
Emerald
Lemon Stone
Omni Geode
Lava Eel
- All universal loves
Liked Gifts
For a solid increase of 45 friendship points, these gifts are also well-received:
- All Universal Likes
- All Artifacts
Cave Carrot
Quartz
Disliked & Hated Gifts
Steer clear of these items, as they will negatively impact friendship:
- Mushrooms and all other foraged items
- All universal hates, except for Artifacts
Movie Theater Preferences
With the Movie Theater now a part of Stardew Valley, players can invite the Dwarf to enjoy a film. The Dwarf is quite the cinephile, loving all movie options. However, his taste in snacks is more discerning. He Loves Stardrop Sorbet and Rock Candy, and Likes Cotton Candy, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jawbreaker, Salmon Burger, Sour Slimes, and Star Cookie. Choosing the right concessions can significantly enhance the friendship points gained from this outing.
