Fans of the classic Fighting Fantasy books may recall those iconic choose-your-own-adventure novels where you dictated the story's direction through your decisions. If you're looking to relive that nostalgia with the convenience of modern digital technology, there is a new option available: Eldrum: Black Dust, the latest installment in the renowned Eldrum series.
Eldrum not only delivers the core CYOA experience by letting you shape your fate through pivotal choices but also incorporates substantial gameplay elements. While you navigate from scene to scene, you will engage in D&D-inspired combat, select from multiple classes, and explore a rich dark fantasy setting.
Now available on iOS and Android for just $8.99, Eldrum: Black Dust features distinctive original art, immersive audio design, and numerous endings to uncover. Whether you are experimenting with new choices or trying out different character classes, the game offers significant replay value.
Dust offOne of the main barriers to entry for CYOA games is often their lack of interactivity beyond making narrative choices. However, even in the early days of Fighting Fantasy, some titles included actual TTRPG-lite combat and mechanics—a feature still used today to introduce players to new systems.
In my view, Eldrum: Black Dust has much to offer, combining original art and music with a branching narrative and engaging combat. While it might not appeal to genre skeptics, if you are eager for something fresh and love a good CYOA, this could be the perfect early Christmas gift.
