Gandhi's Return in Civilization 7?

by Dylan Feb 21,2025

Civilization 7's launch has left many veteran players wondering about the absence of a familiar face: Mahatma Gandhi. A staple of the series since its inception in 1991, Gandhi's absence is notable. However, according to Civilization 7 lead designer Ed Beach, Gandhi's omission is not a permanent one.

Beach confirmed that Gandhi's inclusion is planned, likely as DLC. He explained that Firaxis has a long-term roadmap for adding civilizations, and some, like Gandhi's India, fit better into later releases. This strategy also allows for the introduction of newer, less established civilizations in the base game. The designer cited the previous absences of Mongolia and Persia in earlier Civilization titles as precedent.

While the immediate future might see Firaxis focusing on addressing player feedback regarding Civilization 7's user interface, map variety, and missing features (currently reflected in mixed Steam reviews), the long-term outlook for Gandhi's return remains positive. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, while acknowledging negative initial reviews, expressed confidence in the game's long-term success and appeal to established Civilization players.
