EOS: A Crossplay Mandate?
The core issue revolves around Epic Games' requirement for crossplay functionality across all PC storefronts for multiplayer titles on their store. While Focus Entertainment, the publisher, clarified that linking Steam and Epic accounts isn't necessary for single-player enjoyment, Epic Games confirmed to Eurogamer that EOS is the mandated solution for enabling crossplay. This means even Steam users who don't want crossplay must install EOS.
An Epic Games spokesperson stated, "Cross-play across all PC storefronts is a requirement... ensuring players and friends can play together." They added that developers can choose methods to meet this requirement, but EOS, with its social overlay features, is a readily available and free option. This effectively makes EOS the easiest route for developers aiming for Epic Games Store distribution and cross-platform play.
Player Backlash and Privacy Concerns
The mandatory EOS installation has sparked significant negative reactions. Concerns about the perceived "spyware" nature of additional software and a preference to avoid the Epic Games launcher are key drivers of this discontent. The extensive EOS EULA, and its implications regarding data collection (region-specific), have further fueled the negative sentiment, leading to review bombing on Steam.
