Deltarune Update: Chapter 4 Nears Completion, but Release Remains Distant
Toby Fox, creator of Undertale, recently shared a development update for Deltarune in his newsletter. While Chapter 4 is nearing completion, a simultaneous release of Chapters 3 and 4 on PC, Switch, and PS4 is still some time away.
Fox confirmed that Chapter 4 is largely playable, needing only polish. Maps and battles are finished, but minor adjustments remain, including refinements to cutscenes, battle balancing, visual improvements, background additions, and ending sequence enhancements. Three friends have already played through the chapter and provided positive feedback.
The multi-platform and multilingual release presents significant challenges, especially since this is the first major paid release since Undertale. Fox emphasizes the need to ensure the game's quality.
Before launch, the team must complete several key tasks:
- Testing new features
- Finalizing PC and console versions
- Japanese localization
- Extensive bug testing
Chapter 3 development is finished (as per Fox's February newsletter). Early work on Chapter 5 has even begun, with map drafts and bullet pattern design underway.
While no release date was given, the newsletter offered glimpses of upcoming content: Ralsei and Rouxls dialogue, an Elnina character description, and a new item, GingerGuard. The extended wait since Chapter 2 has generated both anticipation and some initial disappointment, but Fox assures fans that Chapters 3 and 4 combined will be longer than Chapters 1 and 2. He also anticipates a smoother release schedule for future chapters once Chapters 3 and 4 are released.
