Avowed Companions Ranked: From Worst to Best

Beyond their narrative roles and dialogue, companions in Avowed offer practical advantages, from pathfinding to combat prowess. This ranking assesses each companion, from least to most effective.

  1. Marius

Marius in Avowed

Early game exploration benefits aside, Marius proves quickly outmatched. His passive abilities aid in locating items and plants, but his combat capabilities are underwhelming.

Abilities & Upgrades:

  • Blinding Roots: Roots enemies (upgradeable to stun, trap multiple, and inflict Bleed).
  • Heart Seeker: Piercing shot (upgradeable to hit two enemies, increased damage vs. low-health enemies, reduced cooldown).
  • Shadow Step: Vanishes and strikes (upgradeable to instantly kill stunned enemies, increased damage vs. low-health enemies, increased target count).
  • Wounding Shots: Inflicts Bleed (upgradeable to reduce enemy damage reduction, slow enemies, and reduce enemy damage).

Marius's abilities primarily focus on crowd control and weakening enemies. While effective against certain enemy types, particularly when paired with a melee-focused Envoy, his overall power falls short for most of the Avowed journey.

  1. Giatta

Giatta in Avowed

Giatta, a support-oriented Animancer, excels in healing, shielding, and buffing the party. While lacking in raw damage, her utility shines in challenging encounters, such as boss fights. She also possesses the unique ability to activate Essence Generators, opening up late-game areas.

Abilities & Upgrades:

  • Purification: Heals allies (upgradeable to increased healing, enemy interruption, and increased ally damage reduction).
  • Barrier: Provides temporary health (upgradeable to increased temporary health, healing on barrier expiration, and self-protection).
  • Acceleration: Boosts ally speed (upgradeable to damage reduction, extended duration, and ability cooldown reduction).
  • Reconstruction: Heals allies with attacks (upgradeable to increased healing for low-health allies, temporary health for full-health allies, and ally revival on enemy kill).

Giatta synergizes exceptionally well with magic-focused Envoy builds.

  1. Kai

Kai in Avowed

Despite being an early companion, Kai remains valuable throughout the game. A formidable tank, he delivers significant damage with minimal player intervention.

Abilities & Upgrades:

  • Fire and Ire: Blunderbuss shot with stun and taunt (upgradeable to ignite, increased stun, and reduced cooldown).
  • Unbending Defense: Health regeneration and damage reduction (upgradeable to increased damage reduction, increased health regeneration, and area-of-effect damage).
  • Leap of Daring: Area-of-effect stun and taunt (upgradeable to increased area of effect, temporary health per hit, and bonus attack damage per hit).
  • Second Wind: Self-revival (upgradeable to increased health restoration, attack speed boost, and ability cooldown reset).

Kai's abilities are potent against various enemy types, offering both single-target and crowd control options. His self-revival further enhances his effectiveness. He can also utilize fire to remove obstacles.

  1. Yatzli

Yatzli in Avowed

Yatzli, a powerful Wizard, boasts high-damage attacks and exceptional crowd control. She's the closest equivalent to air support in the Living Lands.

Abilities & Upgrades:

  • Essence Explosion: Explosive arcane damage (upgradeable to increased blast radius, fire accumulation, and reduced cooldown).
  • Minoletta’s Missile Battery: Homing arcane missiles (upgradeable to increased fire rate, range, and shock accumulation).
  • Arduos Delay of Motion: Slows enemies (upgradeable to increased slow, area-of-effect slow, and frost accumulation).
  • Blast: Area-of-effect damage on hit (upgradeable to explosive damage for breaking obstacles, increased stun, and status effect chances).

Yatzli's potent abilities, coupled with her obstacle-clearing capabilities, make her an invaluable companion throughout the Avowed experience.

Avowed launches on PC and Xbox on February 18.
