For kids aged 5-7, drag colorful blocks to craft programs and bring characters to life!
ScratchJr is a beginner-friendly programming language designed to empower young children (ages 5 and up) to build their own interactive stories and games. By snapping together vibrant graphical blocks, kids can make characters move, jump, dance, and even sing. They can customize characters in the built-in paint editor, add their voices and sounds, or even insert personal photos — then use the blocks to breathe life into their creations.
Inspired by the widely-used Scratch programming language (http://scratch.mit.edu), ScratchJr reimagines the interface and language to suit younger minds. Every feature has been thoughtfully crafted to align with children’s cognitive, personal, social, and emotional growth.
We view coding as a vital form of literacy. Much like writing helps organize thoughts and communicate ideas, coding does the same — but in a digital space. Once considered challenging, we believe coding should be accessible to everyone, just as reading and writing are.
As young learners explore ScratchJr, they discover how to creatively express themselves through technology, rather than merely interacting with it. Along the way, they develop problem-solving skills, project design abilities, and foundational sequencing skills essential for future academic success. Math and language concepts are woven seamlessly into activities, fostering early numeracy and literacy development. Through ScratchJr, children aren’t just learning to code; they’re coding to learn.
Developed collaboratively by the Developmental Technologies group at Tufts University, the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, and the Playful Invention Company, the Android version of ScratchJr was implemented by Two Sigma. The graphics and illustrations were brought to life by HvingtQuatre Company and Sarah Thomson.
