Ōkami 2 Confirmed to Be a Direct Sequel, Still in Early Development

by Victoria Mar 01,2025

The highly anticipated Ōkami sequel, announced at last year's Game Awards, has finally received some clarification. While details remain scarce, IGN's recent interview with the project leads revealed key information. The sequel is confirmed as a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline, featuring the return of the sun goddess Amaterasu, as confirmed by producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi. Director Hideki Kamiya's enigmatic response to the question only added to the intrigue.

PlayThe interview also addressed the Nintendo DS prequel, Ōkamiden, starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu. While acknowledging its existence and the mixed fan reception, Hirabayashi stated that the new sequel will be a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's narrative, effectively side-stepping Ōkamiden's storyline. This decision is likely due to Ōkamiden's development without key original team members and its perceived inconsistencies with the original game's narrative.

The original Ōkami's ending, featuring Amaterasu and another character embarking on a new, unexplored journey, provides a natural foundation for this sequel. The game's conclusion leaves ample opportunity for new challenges and adventures for both Amaterasu and the supporting characters.

However, fans will have to exercise patience. The sequel is still in its very early stages of development, with the early announcement driven by the team's excitement. According to Hirabayashi, further updates are some time away.
