Microsoft's Xbox president, Sarah Bond, recently announced on X that a dedicated Android app will arrive in November, enabling users to buy and play games directly within the app. This development follows a significant antitrust ruling against Google, forcing them to offer broader app store options and increased flexibility for third-party app stores.
The Epic Games vs. Google ruling mandates Google to provide rival app stores with access to its entire app catalog and distribute these third-party stores for three years (starting November 1st, 2024). This opens the door for Xbox's direct-to-consumer app strategy.
What's New?
While an existing Xbox app allows for game downloads to Xbox consoles and cloud streaming for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, the November update introduces the crucial ability to purchase games directly through the app.
