A prologue quest, "The Lotus Eaters," launches in August 2024, reintroducing a beloved Warframe character and setting the stage for the main event. This prologue, preceding the full 1999 release in Winter 2024, introduces Sevatgoth Prime and exclusive weaponry. Completing "The Lotus Eaters" is a prerequisite for playing Warframe: 1999.
Warframe: 1999 plunges players into an alternate 1999, where a deadly Y2K virus threatens global devastation. The setting: Höllvania, a 90s metropolis corrupted by Techrot. Players navigate this retro-futuristic landscape using Atomicyles, futuristic vehicles enabling bullet jumps, drifts, and explosive capabilities. The player controls the Hex, a team of six unique characters, each equipped with a Protoframe – a Warframe showcasing the human form beneath.
The Hex team boasts an impressive voice cast, including Alpha Takahashi, Ben Starr, Melissa Medina, and Amelia Tyler. Player interaction with the characters extends to in-game instant messaging, adding a unique social dimension.
The update introduces On-lyne, a 90s boy band antagonist, led by Zeke (voiced by Nick Apostolides). Their infectious music adds a memorable soundtrack, with their hit single, "Party of Your Lifetime," available on major streaming platforms.
Fashion takes center stage with enhanced customization. Players can equip two fashion frame loadouts and utilize new Gemini Skins, allowing Protoframes like Arthur and Aoi to be used in the Origin system. These skins feature fully voiced lines, enhancing the immersive experience.
Beyond the core gameplay, Digital Extremes is collaborating with THE LINE to produce an anime short based on Warframe: 1999. High-fidelity Heirloom skins for Ember (available now) and Rhino (early 2025) further enhance the visual appeal.
