Ryan Gosling in Talks to Star in Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film

Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool & Wolverine, is reportedly on the verge of joining the Star Wars universe, bringing Ryan Gosling along for the ride. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Levy's Star Wars project is in negotiations with Gosling for the lead role. Levy has been developing this film since 2022, with a script completed last year. He's once again collaborating with Jonathan Tropper, screenwriter of This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, both Levy-directed films.

Plot details remain tightly under wraps. No information has been released regarding Gosling's character or the film's time period within the Star Wars timeline. However, it's confirmed to be separate from the Skywalker Saga. The Hollywood Reporter also indicates it's intended as a standalone film, ruling out a planned trilogy.

Gosling's potential involvement has accelerated the project's timeline. While Levy was previously slated to direct a boy band film starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, THR suggests that Gosling's confirmation would prioritize the Star Wars movie, pushing production to begin this fall.

Star Wars is currently undergoing a transition. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Disney+ recently concluded its Skeleton Crew series. On the film front, Dave Filoni's Mandalorian and Grogu movie completed filming in December, targeting a May 22, 2026 release. A new trilogy centered around Daisy Ridley's Rey is also in the works.

A release date for Levy's Star Wars film remains unannounced, pending the project's progression. For a comprehensive overview of upcoming Star Wars content, consult our 2025 preview.
