Splitgate 2: The Highly Anticipated Sequel Arrives in 2025
1047 Games, the creators of the popular "Halo meets Portal" shooter, Splitgate, has announced a sequel. Prepare for a fresh take on portal-based arena combat in the Sol Splitgate League.
Launch Date and Engine
Splitgate 2 is set to launch in 2025. The cinematic announcement trailer, released July 18th, showcases the game's updated visuals, powered by Unreal Engine 5.
A Decade of Gameplay
CEO Ian Proulx emphasized the goal of creating a game built for longevity – a title designed to thrive for ten years or more. This ambition led to a complete reimagining of the core gameplay loop, aiming for a deeper and more rewarding experience. Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, highlighted a refined portal mechanic, stating that the team aimed to create a system rewarding skillful portal use without making it essential for victory.
Familiar Yet Revolutionary
While retaining core Splitgate elements, Splitgate 2 promises a significantly refreshed feel. The game will remain free-to-play and will be available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. A new faction system adds strategic depth.
From Humble Beginnings to Global Phenomenon
The original Splitgate's success story began with a demo that garnered 600,000 downloads in a single month. This unexpected popularity led to server upgrades and several years in early access before its official release in September 2022. The decision to cease updates on the original game paved the way for Splitgate 2, promising revolutionary changes.
Factions and Gameplay
The announcement trailer introduced the Sol Splitgate League and three distinct factions: Aeros (emphasizing speed), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force). While details remain scarce, the developers confirmed Splitgate 2 will not be a hero shooter.
Gameplay reveals are planned for Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25). The trailer, however, offers a glimpse of new maps, weapons, and the return of dual-wielding.
No Single-Player, But Rich Lore
Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a companion mobile app will provide access to comics, character cards, and a faction quiz to help players find their perfect fit.
