by Hunter Jan 21,2025

Sony rumored to be exploring a return to the handheld gaming console market, potentially challenging Nintendo's dominance. Long-time gaming enthusiasts will recall Sony's previous ventures with the PlayStation Portable (PSP) and PlayStation Vita.

According to reports from Bloomberg, via Gamedeveloper, Sony is in the early stages of developing a new portable console. This new device aims to compete directly with the Nintendo Switch and any future iterations.

While the source relies on individuals "familiar with the matter," the possibility remains. However, it's crucial to remember that this is likely a very early stage of development, and Sony might ultimately decide against releasing the console.

The decline of dedicated handheld consoles, apart from Nintendo's continued success, was partly due to the rise of mobile gaming. Despite the Vita's popularity, Sony and others seemed to believe smartphones had rendered dedicated handhelds obsolete.

Recent years have witnessed a resurgence in portable gaming, however. The Steam Deck and various other handheld devices, along with the ongoing success of the Nintendo Switch, demonstrate a renewed interest. Furthermore, mobile device technology has significantly improved.

This technological advancement, rather than deterring Sony, could be a compelling factor in their decision. The enhanced capabilities of mobile devices might suggest a viable market exists for a high-quality dedicated handheld console.
