PGA Tour 2K25: The Final Preview

by Ryan Mar 16,2025

If you polled golf game enthusiasts about which pro sports simulation series they'd most like to see 2K tackle next, a revived NFL 2K would undoubtedly top the list. Even MLB and NHL might rank higher than a new golf game. Yet, 2K is returning for a third swing with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a couple of hours, it's clear there's much to enjoy.

HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for over a decade, starting with The Golf Club before partnering with 2K and rebranding to PGA Tour 2K in 2020. This experience is evident in 2K25. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an expansive course selection (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is genuinely fun. Minor issues like occasional framerate hiccups on PC (when surveying holes) are easily overlooked.

PlayThe upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick option—pull down to wind up, forward to strike—felt intuitive. Difficulty settings adjust the swing's forgiveness, allowing for casual play or a more realistic challenge. The LB button lets you shape shots for extra control, and improved ball physics add realism. The ability to adjust your tee shot position laterally is a welcome addition. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, further enhanced the experience.

MyCareer mode receives a boost with narrative mechanics, reminiscent of other sports games. I was even offered a movie role alongside Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing). Choices impact stat boosts, and earned VC unlocks gear that affects stats. Skill upgrades are earned through gameplay. Added Quests, refreshed weekly, provide ongoing goals (like achieving 10 consecutive birdies).

PlayThe MyPlayer creator, while not extensively explored, offered sufficient customization. Skill trees add depth. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies (clubs), promise engaging casual fun, echoing the enjoyable social aspects of games like *Links 2004*. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players in different time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 excels without being exceptional in any single area. This makes it hard to gush over, but it's shaping up to be a solid choice for golf fans and players seeking a relaxed gaming experience. A playable demo is available now.
