Mastering the Art of Parrying in Avowed: A Comprehensive Guide

Nothing beats the thrill of perfectly parrying an enemy attack in an action game, turning their offensive momentum into a devastating counter-attack. This guide will show you how to unlock and utilize the parry mechanic in Avowed.

Unlocking the Parry Ability

Parrying isn't immediately available. To unlock it, navigate to the "Abilities" menu, then select the "Ranger" tab. The Parry ability is located in the top middle column. You'll need to invest an Ability point into one of the three core skill trees before you can unlock it.

Parry has three ranks:

Rank Player Level Requirement Description
1 N/A (1 Point Spent) Unlocks the Parry ability.
2 Player Level 5 Increases Parry efficiency by 25%, enhancing stun.
3 Player Level 8 Increases Parry efficiency by 50%, enhancing stun.

At level 10, you can unlock "Arrow Deflection," allowing you to parry projectiles.

Executing a Parry

Successful parrying requires precise timing; you must block just before an enemy attack connects. A metallic clang and a visual cue will confirm a successful parry, leaving your enemy stunned. The timing varies slightly between enemies, so practice is key. While challenging initially, it's less demanding than in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.

Limitations of Parrying

Not all attacks are parryable. Attacks indicated by a red circle require dodging. Furthermore, only certain weapons can parry: single-handed, two-handed weapons (not in your off-hand), and shields (in your off-hand). Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot be used to parry.

Benefits of Parrying

Parrying stuns attackers, creating an opening for significant damage. It's a defensive and offensive technique, minimizing damage taken while maximizing damage output. However, it's most effective for melee builds. Ranged characters might find it less useful. Fortunately, respeccing is easy in Avowed, allowing you to adjust your build as needed.
