Overwatch 2 Finally Returning to China

by Hannah Jan 25,2025

Overwatch 2's triumphant return to China is set for February 19th, following a two-year hiatus. A technical test will precede the launch, commencing January 8th and running until the 15th. This marks the end of a long wait for Chinese players, who missed 12 seasons of content.

The game's absence stemmed from the expiration of Blizzard's contract with NetEase in January 2023. However, a renewed partnership in April 2024 paved the way for the game's return. The technical test allows players to experience all 42 heroes, including the newest additions, and the classic 6v6 mode.

The return coincides with the start of Overwatch 2 Season 15. Furthermore, Blizzard's commitment to the Chinese esports scene is evident with the announcement of the first live Overwatch Championship Series event in Hangzhou in 2025, establishing a dedicated China region.

Chinese players will have a significant amount of catching up to do, having missed six new heroes (Lifeweaver, Illari, Mauga, Venture, Juno, and Hazard), new game modes (Flashpoint and Clash), maps (Antarctic Peninsula, Samoa, and Runasapi), story missions (Invasion), and numerous hero reworks and balance changes.

Unfortunately, the 2025 Lunar New Year event will likely conclude shortly before the game's relaunch, potentially depriving Chinese players of the event's unique skins and the Prop Hunt game mode. Hopefully, Blizzard will address this.
