Doom 64's Potential Next-Gen Arrival: PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Versions Hinted at by ESRB Update

Recent updates to the ESRB ratings suggest a possible imminent release of Doom 64 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. While Bethesda and id Software remain officially silent, the updated ESRB listing strongly indicates a new port is in the works.

The original Doom 64, a Nintendo 64 exclusive from 1997, received a 2020 enhanced port for PS4 and Xbox One, featuring graphical improvements and an additional chapter. This new ESRB rating suggests Bethesda is bringing the classic title to current-gen consoles.

The timing of ESRB ratings often precedes game releases by a few months. This, coupled with past instances where ESRB listings leaked upcoming game releases before official announcements (such as Felix the Cat's re-release in 2023), adds weight to the speculation. While a PC version isn't explicitly mentioned, the 2020 release included a Steam version, and modding communities already offer ways to experience Doom 64 on PC. Bethesda's history of surprise releases for older Doom titles further fuels anticipation.

Looking beyond Doom 64, 2025 promises another exciting entry for Doom fans: Doom: The Dark Ages. A potential January release date announcement is rumored, with a full launch expected sometime next year. Releasing updated versions of classic Doom titles could serve as excellent pre-game hype for this upcoming installment.
