MultiVersus to Shut Down After Season 5
Warner Bros. Games has announced the closure of MultiVersus, effective May 30, 2025, following the conclusion of its fifth and final season. The news, shared via the official MultiVersus Twitter (X) account and website on January 31st, 2025, confirmed that Season 5 will be the game's last content update.
MultiVersus Season 5: A Final Farewell
Season 5, running from February 4th to May 30th, 2025, will introduce two new playable characters: Aquaman (DC) and Lola Bunny (Looney Tunes). These, along with all other Season 5 content, will be unlockable through gameplay. Following the season's end, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. No official reason for the shutdown has been given.
Offline Mode: A Lasting Legacy
While online play will cease, MultiVersus will offer a local gameplay mode after Season 5 concludes. This allows solo play against AI or multiplayer matches with up to three friends. To access this offline mode, players must download the latest game version between February 4th, 9 AM PST and May 30th, 9 AM PDT. Upon logging in, a local save file will be automatically created, preserving all earned and purchased content linked to the player's account.
Real-money transactions were halted on January 31st, 2025. Any remaining Gleamium (in-game currency) can be used until Season 5's end.
A Brief History and a Community Thank You
MultiVersus launched its public beta in July 2022, quickly gaining popularity as a free-to-play fighting game. Following a relaunch in May 2024 with added features (new characters, rollback netcode, a PvE mode, and revised currency systems), the game faced challenges including technical issues, disconnections, and player dissatisfaction with microtransactions. Reportedly, player counts dropped significantly in July 2024.
At its closure, MultiVersus will boast a roster of 35 playable characters. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed gratitude for the community's support throughout the game's lifespan.
MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30th, 2025.
