MultiVersus, the highly anticipated 2024 free-to-play crossover fighting game, is set to go offline for good in the coming months. Developer Player First Games confirmed in January that Season 5 will mark the end, with the game shutting down permanently at 5 p.m. PDT (12 p.m. EDT) on May 30, 2025. The closure has been attributed to significant financial setbacks for Warner Bros. Discovery, which faced a $100 million write-down following the game’s underwhelming performance. This setback followed earlier challenges after the disappointing release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January, pushing the total losses in the games division to $300 million.
In response to these developments, Warner Bros. recently announced the cancellation of its planned Wonder Woman game and the shutdown of three studios: Monolith Productions, WB San Diego, and the team behind MultiVersus, Player First Games.
As the final hours tick away, the community has been reflecting on their experiences in a thread titled "Tomorrow Multiversus shuts down, what are the final things you have to say about the game." Hundreds of players chimed in, sharing cherished memories and heartfelt tributes.
One user reminisced, "Multiversus was a dream. It was a platform fighter that focused on quick offense and 2v2 play, fostering incredible team synergy. Even beyond its concept, the casting was superb. Many of the voice actors reprised their iconic roles, such as the late Kevin Conroy as Batman, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, and others. The interactions between characters during and after matches added depth and charm."
Despite its flaws, like the perplexing design choices for characters such as Banana Guard and Shaggy, the player acknowledged, "A vast majority of the movesets were inspired. There will never be a game quite like Multiversus."
Other users echoed similar sentiments, with one recalling, "Hard to believe it's actually over. #Multiversus #MVS," while another shared a heartfelt tribute, stating, "This game will always hold a special place in my heart, right next to PlayStation All-Stars."
While the majority of the community accepts the inevitable, a few remain hopeful, noting the logistical challenges of reviving the game due to its complex intellectual property ties. Nevertheless, some fans are taking steps to preserve the game’s legacy even after the servers go dark.
As IGN noted in its MultiVersus review, the game's unique blend of team-based battles made it a standout title in the platform fighter genre, earning it an impressive 8 out of 10.
