Marvel Snap's Second Anniversary Brings Doctor Doom 2099: Top Deck Strategies

Marvel Snap continues its second-year run with more alternate character versions, this time featuring the formidable Doctor Doom 2099. This guide explores optimal deck builds leveraging this powerful addition.

Understanding Doctor Doom 2099

Doctor Doom 2099 is a 4-cost, 2-power card with a unique ability: After each turn, if you played exactly one card, a DoomBot 2099 is added to a random location. DoomBot 2099 (also 4-cost, 2-power) provides an ongoing buff: "+1 Power to your other DoomBots and Doom." Crucially, this buff applies to both DoomBot 2099s and regular Doctor Doom cards.

Playing one card per turn maximizes Doom 2099's potential, potentially yielding 17+ power. Early deployment or strategic use of cards like Magik can significantly amplify this power.

However, two key weaknesses exist: DoomBot 2099 placement is random, potentially hindering your strategy, and Enchantress completely negates their power boost.

Top Doctor Doom 2099 Decks

Doctor Doom 2099's one-card-per-turn requirement revitalizes Spectrum Ongoing decks. Here's a budget-friendly example:

  • Ant-Man
  • Goose
  • Psylocke
  • Captain America
  • Cosmo
  • Electro
  • Doom 2099
  • Wong
  • Klaw
  • Doctor Doom
  • Spectrum
  • Onslaught

This deck offers flexibility. Early Doom 2099 deployment with Psylocke, or Electro on turn 3 followed by Doom 2099, are key strategies. Wong, Klaw, and Doctor Doom synergize for widespread power distribution. Electro allows for powerful 6-cost card plays alongside DoomBot 2099s and Spectrum. Cosmo protects against Enchantress, a crucial counter.

Alternatively, a Patriot-style deck incorporating Doom 2099 is effective:

  • Ant-Man
  • Zabu
  • Dazzler
  • Mister Sinister
  • Patriot
  • Brood
  • Doom 2099
  • Super Skrull
  • Iron Lad
  • Blue Marvel
  • Doctor Doom
  • Spectrum

This similarly inexpensive deck (only Doom 2099 is a Series 5 card) utilizes Patriot's power scaling. Early game cards like Mister Sinister and Brood set the stage for Doom 2099, Blue Marvel, Doctor Doom, or Spectrum. Zabu discounts 4-cost cards for early game flexibility. Strategic skipping of DoomBot 2099 spawns allows for two 3-cost cards on the final turn (e.g., Patriot and a discounted Iron Lad). Super Skrull counters other Doom 2099 decks, a common meta strategy. However, this deck is vulnerable to Enchantress.

Is Doctor Doom 2099 Worth the Investment?

While accompanying cards Daken and Miek are relatively weak, Doctor Doom 2099's power and deck-building versatility make him a worthwhile acquisition. Use Collector's Tokens if available, but don't hesitate to obtain him. His impact on the Marvel Snap meta is likely to be substantial.
