Yasumi Matsuno, the visionary creator behind Final Fantasy Tactics, shares how the game's narrative emerged as a beacon of hope during Japan's economic crisis—an era he describes as having "stolen people's dreams."
As the long-awaited Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles finally prepares for launch this year, Matsuno penned an emotional reflection on X/Twitter. His post framed the game's rerelease as particularly timely, with his statement "I offer this story once more" carrying renewed resonance amid 2025's global tensions and societal fractures.
"Three decades ago," Matsuno recounted, "Japan's economic bubble burst with devastating consequences—financial systems drowning in bad debts, businesses collapsing overnight, unemployment skyrocketing, and society plunging into paralysis. This was an age where hope became a luxury few could afford."
"From this crucible," he continued, "I forged Ramza's tale—a noble youth defiantly challenging rigid class structures alongside Delita, who manipulated the chaos for personal ascent. Their intertwined journey of camaraderie and treachery became a mirror for our times."
"Now in 2025—as societal rifts grow ever wider—I resurrect this story anew. The power to push back against injustice remains yours to wield."
The Final Fantasy Tactics remaster presents dual editions: the timeless original (featuring the War of the Lions localization) alongside a thoroughly reimagined experience with complete voiceovers, modernized UI, narrative expansions, and refined graphics. Both versions arrive on PS5 September 30, 2025.
Last night's announcements positioned Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles among dozens of reveals during PlayStation's high-octane State of Play showcase, which also unveiled 007 First Light, Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls, Romeo is a Dead Man, and the release window for Silent Hill f—setting the stage for Summer Game Fest's upcoming festivities.
