Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 4th, 2024! Summer's warmth has faded, leaving behind memories of sunshine and fun. I'm feeling a bit wiser after our shared summer journey, and I appreciate your company. As autumn arrives, I want to express my gratitude for being the best gaming buddies anyone could ask for. Today's update is packed with reviews, new releases, and some tempting sales! Let's dive in!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Nintendo Switch has given us second chances at many classic titles, and now the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection brings us Miles Edgeworth's previously unlocalized adventures. This collection masterfully builds upon previous storylines, particularly in the second game, which enhances the first. Experiencing the series from the prosecutor's perspective offers a fresh look at familiar mechanics – gathering evidence, questioning witnesses, and solving cases. While the pacing differs from mainline Ace Attorney titles, the unique presentation and Edgeworth's character make it engaging. If the first game feels slow, persevere to the second; it's significantly better and adds context to the first game's events.

Bonus features include an art and music gallery, a story mode for casual play, and the option to switch between original and updated visuals/soundtrack. A convenient dialog history is also included, a must-have for these types of games.

The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection offers a compelling dual experience, and the inclusion of the second game's official English localization is fantastic. The extra features enhance the overall package. With this release, nearly every Ace Attorney title (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is now available on Switch. If you've enjoyed other Ace Attorney games, this is a must-have.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to the NES classic Gimmick! is a surprising yet welcome addition. Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel stays true to the original's challenging physics-based platforming. Six extensive levels await, offering a steep challenge even for experienced players. A new easier mode is available for those seeking a less demanding experience. Yumetaro's star attack returns, serving as a weapon, vehicle, and puzzle-solving tool. Collectibles provide customization options, rewarding players for tackling optional, harder sections.

The game's length is comparable to the original, but the difficulty remains high. Frequent deaths are inevitable, but generous checkpoints mitigate frustration. The charming visuals and lively music add to the experience, but don't underestimate the challenge. Mastering platforming skills and strategic use of Yumetaro's star are crucial for progress.

Gimmick! 2 is a surprisingly excellent follow-up, successfully building upon the original without losing its own identity. Fans of the first game will love this, and challenging platforming enthusiasts should definitely check it out. However, casual players should be warned: it's as difficult as its predecessor, despite the easier mode.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platformer style to a shoot 'em up experience. While the Switch's hardware limitations slightly impact the visuals, the intense action, memorable soundtrack, and creepy aesthetic remain captivating. The weapon system adds a strategic layer, requiring players to manage gun energy, melee attacks, and a rotating third weapon, all while dodging enemy fire and obstacles. Mastering this rhythm is key to success.

Despite its departure from the original's gameplay, Mecha Therion retains its distinct atmosphere. While performance might be better on other platforms, the Switch version delivers a satisfying shoot 'em up experience.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

Licensed games often cater to fans, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash is no exception. The game excels in fan service, offering a well-written story and systems rewarding dedicated fans. However, the limited number of repetitive mini-games might disappoint those unfamiliar with the Umamusume franchise. The mini-games lack depth, and only fans are likely to fully enjoy the narrative.

Even for fans, the game's focus on fan service might overshadow the gameplay. While the presentation is strong, the limited content and repetitive gameplay hinder its overall appeal. The unlockable mini-game is a highlight, but the overall experience is short-lived.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

This collection showcases Sunsoft's lesser-known side, offering three charming 8-bit titles: Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three games are fully localized, a noteworthy achievement. The collection includes save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries.

The games themselves are a mixed bag. 53 Stations is challenging due to its awkward weapon mechanics, but its unique theme adds charm. Ripple Island is a solid adventure game, and The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but inconsistent. While not top-tier NES titles, they offer a unique and historically significant experience.

This collection is a treat for Sunsoft fans and those who appreciate exploring lesser-known game libraries. The care taken in localization and presentation makes this a worthwhile purchase.
