The vast world of *Project Zomboid* presents a significant challenge for traversal. While walking is an option, it's hardly practical for anything beyond a challenge run. Luckily, many vehicles still function, and if keys are elusive, hotwiring offers a solution. It's easier than you might think; a few button presses can get you behind the wheel, but there are prerequisites.
You don't need a top-tier *Project Zomboid* build, but understanding these requirements is key before you start liberating vehicles.
How Hotwiring Works in *Project Zomboid*

Successfully hotwiring a car grants you control as long as fuel and vehicle condition permit, even without the correct keys. However, you'll need at least Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills. Alternatively, choosing the Burglar occupation during character creation bypasses these skill requirements.
Hotwiring a Car in *Project Zomboid*: A Step-by-Step Guide
- Enter the vehicle.
- Access the vehicle radial menu (default key: V).
- Select "Hotwire" and wait briefly.
Once you meet the requirements, these three steps work on any operable vehicle. The hotwiring process is automatic; once complete, press W to start the engine. Remember, fuel levels vary, so securing gasoline is advisable.
Leveling Up Electrical and Mechanical Skills
If you didn't start as a Burglar, you can increase Electrical and Mechanics skills through in-game activities:
- Electrical: Dismantle electronics (watches, radios, televisions).
- Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.
Books and magazines also provide skill boosts, found in homes, shops, mailboxes, sheds, and bookshelves. Project Zomboid server admins can use the "/addxp" command (check in-game for syntax) to directly grant skill XP.
Appropriate tools (at least a screwdriver) are necessary for dismantling and installation. Right-click vehicle parts and select "Vehicle Mechanics" for removal.
