Path of Exile 2 Expeditions: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces Expeditions, a revamped endgame event lifted from a previous league. This guide covers Expedition mechanics, rewards, and the associated passive skill tree. Four main endgame events exist in PoE 2's Atlas: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions.

Locating and Initiating an Expedition

Expedition map nodes on the Atlas are marked with a light blue spiral icon. Guaranteed encounters are secured by placing an Expedition Precursor Tablet in a completed Lost Tower slot. Once in a map, locate the marked area and interact with one of four NPCs near a tent. They provide basic instructions, though not detailed mechanics.

The core Expedition mechanic involves using Explosives to activate Markers. A new UI element (bottom-right) manages Explosives.

  • Runic Monsters: Spawn from Explosives near Red Markers. Larger markers yield larger monster packs. These packs are further enhanced by Unearthed Remnants.
  • Unearthed Remnants: Relics with floating tooltips, offering beneficial or detrimental modifiers (e.g., increased elemental damage but higher item rarity from chests).
  • Excavated Chests: Spawn from Explosives near Black Markers with the spiral symbol. These chests contain Artifacts, Logbooks, currency, Waystones, and high-tier gear.

Explosives have an area of effect (AoE). For optimal farming, avoid overlapping AoE circles when placing Explosives. After placement, interact with the Detonator to activate the Markers and begin the event. Death resets the map, but leaving the area doesn't end the event. A strategic approach involves detonating, retreating, and then returning to engage enemies with AoE abilities.

The Expedition Pinnacle Map

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. These are used to access the Expedition Pinnacle Map via Dannig in your hideout. Slot the Logbook, click "Open Portals," and enter the significantly larger Expedition event (more Explosives).

The Pinnacle Map features Olroth, a challenging boss with an increased spawn chance at higher map levels. A skull icon on the minimap indicates Olroth's presence. Defeating Olroth awards 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points.

Expedition Passive Skill Tree

Located in the Atlas Passive Skill Tree, the Expedition tree enhances the event. It's accessed via the Atlas Map's top-left menu, then the top-right section of the Atlas Skill Tree. The tree features Notable nodes and difficulty-increasing nodes for Logbooks (and Olroth). Defeating Olroth grants 2x points, necessitating increased difficulty for each new Notable node.

Notable Expedition Passive Effect Requirements
Extreme Archaeology Reduces Explosives to 1, but boosts radius (150%), placement range (100%), and reduces enemy Life (20%) N/A
Disturbed Rest 50% more Runic Monster Flags N/A
Detailed Records 50% more Logbooks, Logbooks always spawn with 3x Modifiers Disturbed Rest
Timed Detonations 50% more Artifacts, Detonation chains travel 50% faster N/A
Legendary Battles 50% more Rare monsters, 50% more Exotic Coinage Timed Detonations
Frail Treasures 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds N/A
Weight of History 35% boost to Remnant effects N/A
Unearthed Anomalies Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier Weight of History

Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for significant reward increases. Then consider "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" for further, harder boosts. Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to the significant reduction in Explosives.

Expedition Rewards

Artifacts are key rewards. Four types exist, each used to trade with a specific vendor for particular gear types. Exotic Coinage refreshes vendor inventories.

Reward Use Gear
Broken Circle Artifact Gwennen (Weapons) Weapons
Black Scythe Artifact Tujen (Belts and Jewelry) Belts & Jewelry
Order Artifact Rog (Armor) Armor
Sun Artifact Dannig (Acquiring other Artifacts) N/A
Exotic Coinage Refreshes any Expedition vendor N/A

Expedition Logbooks, obtained from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, unlock the Pinnacle Map and the chance to fight Olroth for exceptional rewards and additional passive skill points. The higher the map's difficulty, the greater the chance of Olroth appearing and dropping better loot.
