MultiVersus to Close After Season 5 Ends in May

by Lillian May 06,2025

Player First Games has announced that Season 5 of MultiVersus will be the final chapter for the Warner Bros. platform fighting game, set to conclude on May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST. The studio shared this news through a blog post on its website, marking the end of the road for the crossover brawler that first launched on May 28 of the previous year. Season 5 is slated to kick off next week on February 4, running until the final curtain in May 2025. At that point, online play will cease, but Player First assures that players can still enjoy all their earned and purchased content offline through local gameplay and training modes.

Expressing gratitude, the MultiVersus team stated, "Most importantly, we want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus. All of us on the Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games teams have poured our heart and soul into this game. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."

Player First also announced that real-money transactions for MultiVersus are no longer available as of today. However, players can continue using Gleamium and character tokens to access in-game content until the support ends on May 30. Additionally, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store at that time.

The decision to end MultiVersus comes after Warner Bros. Discovery labeled the project a significant failure. In a financial call from November, the company disclosed that MultiVersus fell far short of expectations, resulting in a $100 million writedown for its games sector. This added to a total of $300 million in writedowns after the launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January. Last week, Variety reported that Warner Bros. Games head David Haddad would be leaving the company following a challenging 2024.

Chief Financial Officer Gunnar Wiedenfels commented during the November call, "We took another $100 million plus impairment due to the underperforming releases, primarily MultiVersus this quarter, bringing total writedown year-to-date to over $300 million in our games business, a key factor in this year’s studio profit decline."

Despite the imminent shutdown of the free-to-play Warner Bros. fighting game just days after its one-year anniversary, Season 5 promises to end on a high note. Alongside the usual new content updates, Season 5 will introduce new playable characters, Lola Bunny and Aquaman. Lola Bunny, the Looney Toons icon, will be unlockable as a daily calendar reward, while the DC superhero Aquaman will be available through the battle pass, starting next week.
