Free-to-Play Shooter Spectre Divide Shutting Down Weeks After Console Launch

by Christian Mar 17,2025

Free-to-play 3v3 shooter, Spectre Divide, is shutting down just six months after its September 2024 launch and weeks after its arrival on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its developer, Mountaintop Studios, is also closing its doors.

Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell confirmed the news in a social media statement. He explained that the Season 1 launch fell short of the success needed to sustain the game and the studio. While the game initially attracted around 400,000 players in its first week, with a peak concurrent player count of approximately 10,000 across all platforms, long-term player engagement and revenue proved insufficient to cover operational costs. Despite exploring options like finding a publisher, securing additional investment, or pursuing acquisition, Mountaintop was unable to secure the necessary funding to keep Spectre Divide running. Mitchell acknowledged the challenging current climate within the gaming industry.

Spectre Divide will be taken offline within the next 30 days. Players will receive refunds for any money spent since the Season 1 launch.

This announcement contradicts October 2024 reports stating Spectre Divide was secure and would continue to receive updates. At the time, Mitchell stated Mountaintop had sufficient funds to support the game long-term.

PlayIGN's August 2024 preview praised *Spectre Divide*'s innovative Duality system, which allowed players to control two characters simultaneously. However, the game's swift closure follows the recent failures of other live-service titles, including Rocksteady's *Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League* and Sony's *Concord*.
