Crysis 4 Development Paused; Crytek Cuts Up to 60 Jobs

by Joseph Apr 26,2025

Crytek, the renowned game developer, has announced a significant restructuring that will impact 60 of its 400 employees, representing a 15% reduction in its workforce. This decision comes amid challenging market conditions, as stated by Crytek founder Avni Yerli in a recent tweet and an official statement.

In the statement, Yerli explained that despite the growth of their popular game Hunt: Showdown 1896, the company could no longer sustain its operations without making tough decisions. "Like so many of our peers, we aren’t immune to the complex, unfavorable market dynamics that have hit our industry these past several years," Yerli noted. The layoffs, which affect both development teams and shared services, were described as "inevitable" after efforts to reduce costs and operating expenses fell short.

Crytek had previously paused the development of Crysis 4 in the third quarter of 2024, shifting focus and staff to bolster Hunt: Showdown 1896. Despite these efforts, financial sustainability remained elusive, leading to the current layoffs. Crytek has committed to providing severance packages and career assistance services to those affected by the layoffs.

Looking forward, Crytek remains optimistic about its future. Yerli emphasized the company's commitment to Hunt: Showdown 1896, stating, "We have a very strong gaming service and remain fully committed to its operation. We will continue to expand and evolve Hunt: Showdown 1896 with great content and drive our strategy for our engine CRYENGINE."

In other news, it was revealed last year that Crytek had been working on a battle royale-inspired project called Crysis Next. Early gameplay footage surfaced on YouTube, showcasing third-person shooting in a basic warm-up arena with Crysis’ trademark abilities and sound effects. However, Crysis Next was eventually canceled in favor of Crysis 4, which was announced in January 2022.

The Crysis series, known for its stunning visuals, innovative nanosuit powers, and open-ended gameplay, first debuted in 2007. The original game set a high bar for PC performance, leading to the popular phrase, "But can it run Crysis?" used to gauge the capabilities of PC hardware. The latest mainline entry, Crysis 3, was released in February 2013. While Crytek has released remasters of the original games in recent years, updates on Crysis 4 have been sparse since its announcement and teaser three years ago.
