Breakout, the iconic 1976 arcade classic, is getting a modern makeover nearly 50 years later. Breakout Beyond, developed by Choice Provisions (the minds behind the BIT.TRIP series), puts a fresh spin on the classic brick-breaker formula. While retaining the core paddle-and-ball mechanics, the game introduces a unique sideways scrolling perspective, taking players on a left-to-right journey through vibrant levels.
The objective remains the same: break bricks! But Breakout Beyond amps up the excitement with escalating combos that trigger increasingly intense light and visual effects. Special bricks unlock spectacular effects, from explosive blasts to a powerful laser cannon. Prepare for a challenge with 72 planned levels, plus an unlockable endless mode featuring an online global leaderboard for competitive brick-breaking. Prefer a collaborative approach? Breakout Beyond also offers local two-player co-op.
Initially slated as an Intellivision Amico exclusive in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development has taken an interesting turn. Atari acquired the project and completed its development."We're thrilled to bring this gem to our players," stated Atari's Senior Director of Games Publishing, Ethan Stearns. "The team saw a brilliant concept—preserving Breakout's core gameplay while completely reinventing its formula. Breakout Beyond is a worthy addition to the Breakout legacy, and we can't wait to see the incredible combos players will create."
The Intellivision Amico, announced in 2018 with a projected 2020 release, remains unreleased, having faced numerous setbacks and delays over the years. Atari acquired the Intellivision brand and intellectual property rights last year, but not the Amico console itself.
Breakout Beyond launches later this year on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS.
