Crafted from two deep-drawn, nitrided steel half-shells bonded at the rim, the instrument features a hollow interior and a distinctive 'UFO' profile. The top, known as the "Ding," contains a central 'note' hammered into it, encircled by seven or eight hammered 'tone fields.' The bottom, or "Gu," is a smooth surface with a rolled hole in its center. This opening produces a tuned note when the rim is struck. It is also commonly referred to as a handpan.
The Hang operates on some of the same core acoustic principles as the steelpan, but it is engineered to function as a Helmholtz resonator. Its development followed extensive research into the steelpan and various other musical instruments.
