The traditional Sino-European domino set consists of 28 tiles, often referred to as bones, cards, tiles, tickets, stones, or spinners. Each country has its own unique dominoes games:
- England – Muggins (All Fives)
- Scandinavian countries – Bergen
- Mexico – Mexican Train
- Spain – Matador
Extended sets such as double-9 and double-12 dominoes are used for games like Mexican Train and Chicken Foot, allowing for more complex gameplay and additional players.
Historical Background:
The earliest known reference to dominoes dates back to the Song Dynasty in China. The game later appeared in Italy during the 18th century. While the exact evolution from Chinese to modern Western dominoes remains unclear, the game has since grown into a global favorite.
General Rules of Domino Games:
Blocking Game
The simplest form of dominoes is played with a double-six set and two players. After shuffling the 28 tiles face down, each player draws seven. The remaining tiles form the stock or boneyard. Players place their tiles on edge so only they can see their own hand. One player starts by placing the first tile—this varies depending on the game variant:
- In Muggins, the highest double (6-6) begins play.
- In Bergen, the game starts with 0-0.
- In Mexican Train, each round begins with the next lower double.
The line of play is formed as players alternately add tiles to either end, matching values. The game ends when one player plays all their tiles or the game becomes blocked. If blocked, the player who caused the block receives the total pip count from the other players' hands.
Scoring Game
In scoring variants like Muggins (All Fives), points are earned when the sum of the open ends equals 5 or a multiple of 5. In Bergen, points are scored when the open ends match. In Mexican Train, the double-zero domino is worth 50 points.
Draw Game
This version allows players to draw from the stock before playing a tile. Points are calculated based on the pips left in the opponent's hand plus those remaining in the stock. Most rules require at least two tiles to remain in the stock.
