Today's Mario Kart World Direct finally revealed key details about the brand-new Free Roam mode, including its extensive multiplayer capabilities and the many activities available as you explore Mario Kart World's vast, open landscape.
Although we got hands-on with Mario Kart World last week, today's presentation provided the first proper look at Free Roam mode and what it offers. This new feature lets you freely explore the entire game world, similar to Forza Horizon's expansive map. Unlike previous Mario Kart titles where race tracks were isolated and only accessible during races, Mario Kart World integrates them into an open world. This design allows you to drive directly between tracks in certain modes and enjoy the open spaces in between.
When you're not racing, Free Roam mode offers its own adventure experience. The world is filled with hidden collectibles like coins and ? panels, though their specific functions remain unclear for now. You'll also find P-Switches scattered throughout the environment that trigger short challenges, such as collecting special blue coins.
The mode also includes an always-available Photo Mode, letting you capture your racers from different angles and in various poses. Free Roam isn't limited to solo play either—you can explore with friends, take group photos, complete challenges together, or simply enjoy driving around. The mode supports up to four players via split-screen on one system, or up to eight players through local wireless play (with two players per system).
