Description
Phỏm (also known as Ta La or Tu Lo Kho) is a popular Vietnamese card game, especially in the North. "Ta La" is the Southern term, while "Phỏm" is used in the North. The objective is to form sets of cards ("Phom") and minimize the value of remaining cards ("Junk cards"). Using a standard 52-card deck, Phỏm offers diverse gameplay and is a favorite for family gatherings and holidays.
Key Terms:
- Phom: Three or more cards of the same suit with consecutive values, or three cards of the same rank.
- Junk cards: Cards not part of a Phom.
- Ù: A player with three Phoms (no Junk cards) wins immediately.
- Stomach (Cục): The remaining undealt cards.
- Móm: A player unable to form any Phoms at the end of the game.
- Take the pin (Ăn chốt): Taking an opponent's discarded card in the final round.
- Send (Chốt): Discarding a card that can be added to an opponent's Phom in the final round (this card doesn't count against the player's score).
- Compensation (Bồi): If a player takes an opponent's pin and another player subsequently achieves Ù, the pin-taker must pay a penalty. Three consecutive cards also trigger compensation.
- Re (Rê): If a player's discarded card is taken, they get an extra turn.
Gameplay:
- Players: 2-4 players. The dealer (or previous round winner) gets 10 cards; others receive 9. Remaining cards form the "Stomach."
- Turns: Play proceeds counter-clockwise, starting with the player holding 10 cards.
- Playing Cards: A player discards a card. The next player can take it to form a Phom, or draw from the Stomach. This continues until a player achieves Ù or the game ends after four rounds.
- Ending the Game: The game ends when a player achieves Ù or after four rounds if no one achieves Ù.
- Final Round: Players must form all possible Phoms, "send" eligible cards, and then discard their last card. The value of remaining Junk cards determines the winner.
Scoring (When no player achieves Ù):
- The player with the lowest score wins.
- A, J, Q, K count as 1, 11, 12, 13 respectively. Other cards have face value.
- Ties are broken by who discarded their cards first.
- Final Score Calculation:
- 1st place: +6 points
- 2nd place: -1 point
- 3rd place: -2 points
- 4th place: -3 points
- Pin-taker: -4 points
- Pin-receiver: +4 points
- Ù: +15 points (each other player loses 5 points)
- Móm: -4 points for the winner
