Unlock the full potential of your vehicle's diagnostics with Piston, transforming your mobile device into a powerful car scanner. If your Check Engine Light (MIL) is illuminated, Piston enables you to delve into the issue by reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and accessing Freeze Frame data, pinpointing the exact problem for a swift resolution.
To get started, you'll need an ELM327 based adapter, available in Bluetooth or WiFi variants, which connects to your vehicle's OBD2 socket. Piston offers a seamless setup process, guiding you through the connection from the Home page upon first installation, or accessible anytime via Settings.
With Piston, you gain a comprehensive suite of diagnostic tools:
- Read and clear DTCs as defined by the OBD2 standard, ensuring you're fully aware of any issues and can reset the system once resolved.
- Examine Freeze Frame data, capturing a snapshot of sensor data at the moment the ECU detected a malfunction, providing crucial context for troubleshooting.
- Monitor real-time data from your vehicle's sensors, keeping you informed about your car's performance as it happens.
- Check the status of Readiness Monitors to ensure your emission control devices are functioning correctly.
- Store DTCs in a local history for future reference, or log into your account to keep them securely in the cloud.
- View charts of sensor readouts for a visual understanding of your vehicle's data trends.
- Export real-time sensor data to a file for detailed analysis or sharing with professionals.
- Verify your car's VIN number directly through the app.
- Explore detailed information about your vehicle's ECUs, including the OBD protocol and PIDs number.
Some of these advanced features are part of our Premium offering, available through a one-time in-app purchase that unlocks all Premium functionalities without any recurring subscriptions.
To utilize Piston as a car scanner, you must have a separate ELM327 based device, compatible with both OBD-II (also known as OBDII or OBD2) and EOBD standards. Vehicles sold in the USA since 1996 are required to support OBD2, while in the European Union, EOBD has been mandatory for petrol vehicles since 2001 and diesel vehicles since 2004. In Australia and New Zealand, OBD2 is required for petrol cars from 2006 and diesel cars from 2007.
Please note, Piston can only access the data your vehicle supports and provides through the OBD2 standard.
