Description

For BMW enthusiasts looking to maintain their vehicles effectively, the bimmer-tool offers a comprehensive solution for managing your car's diagnostics and maintenance needs. This powerful application allows you to clear fault codes and check the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) status, among other functions. Whether you're dealing with engine issues or need to perform DPF regeneration, bimmer-tool is your go-to for keeping your BMW in top shape.

The bimmer-tool supports a wide range of functions including reading and clearing fault codes, requesting DPF regeneration, and accessing live engine data. It's designed to help you monitor your BMW's health and performance, ensuring that you can address any issues promptly and efficiently. For cars manufactured before 2008, functionality may be limited, and using a K+DCan USB cable is recommended for optimal performance. Wireless ELM adapters might not work with these older models or may not support all functions.

To ensure the best experience with the bimmer-tool, it's crucial to use a reliable OBD adapter. Here are some recommended options:

With bimmer-tool, you can:

  • Read DPF regeneration status and detailed information
  • Request DPF regeneration
  • Reset DPF adaptation values (essential after filter replacement)
  • Read exhaust fumes pressure
  • Read injectors adjustments
  • Read actual and expected values for air mass, intake manifold pressure, and fuel pressure
  • Log data to CSV files for further analysis
  • Register battery replacement without changing battery properties
  • Reset lamps circuits blocked due to short-circuit errors
  • Reset oil/brakes service and change intervals

Supported OBD adapters include:

  • K+D-Can USB: Recommended for its reliability. Requires a USB-OTG cable.
  • ENET cable/Wifi Adapter: Ideal for F & G series. An additional USB-C to Ethernet adapter is needed for ENET cable connections.
  • ELM327 Bluetooth: May be slower than USB. Only genuine ELM327 or PIC18-based adapters are compatible. May not work with older engines.
  • ELM327 WiFi: Can be less stable than other options. Mobile data transmission might need to be disabled to use the WiFi adapter effectively.

To start using bimmer-tool, follow these simple steps:

  1. Connect the adapter to your vehicle's OBD II socket.
  2. Turn the ignition on.
  3. Connect the adapter to your phone:
    • USB: Use a USB-OTG cable to connect the adapter to your phone. Your phone will prompt you to select an app; choose bimmer-tool.
    • Bluetooth: Navigate to your phone's Bluetooth settings, search for devices, and pair the adapter (PIN is typically 0000 or 1234).
    • WiFi: Disable mobile data transmission, enable WiFi, and connect to the adapter's WiFi network.
  4. Launch the bimmer-tool app, go to 'Car', and select your BMW's model and year.
  5. Navigate to 'Connection', choose the connection type, adapter type, and communication protocol.
  6. Tap the 'Connect' button to establish a link with your vehicle.

Please note that for models before 2008, including e46/e39/e83/e53, the app requires a K+DCan cable connection, and only the engine ECU is supported. Using a wireless ELM adapter may not be possible or fully functional.

If you encounter common problems such as 'No response' errors in cars up to 2007 with Bluetooth/WiFi adapters, consider selecting the ATWM option under advanced connection settings. If connectivity issues persist, ensure that the adapter and protocol settings are correct, and try force-stopping all diagnostic apps or restarting your phone before attempting to connect again.

The bimmer-tool requires certain permissions to function correctly, including:

  • Storage: For supporting USB adapters.
  • Photos / Media / Files: To create CSV files.
  • Pair with Bluetooth devices/access Bluetooth settings: For Bluetooth adapter support.
  • Full network access: For WiFi adapter support.
  • Approximate location: Although not used by the app, it's theoretically possible to determine location via Bluetooth.
